Design for first ply failure? Conservative but perhaps, it has to be said, often too much so… Under test conditions local damage, which is often indicated by first ply failure, occurs well before ultimate component collapse. Design for first ply failure rather than consider the progression of damage and the component will be heavier than necessary.
SSA organises a one day event where we will share the secrets of progressive failure analysis of composites. We will cover the basics of composites simulation in Abaqus, as well as the advanced concepts of modeling material and interface degradation and failure.
Why come? Traditionally this high level approach was limited to Aerospace and F1, but the lessons and technologies are directly applicable to other areas of composite engineering such as marine, offshore, renewable energy, automotive, sports equipment, medical and any other field where ultimate structural performance is a critical product characteristic.
If you have some experience of Composites or FEA and would like to look at what it is possible with simulation of composites. Starting with a lecture sessions covering the essential concepts of laminate analysis, the course also gives the attendees the opportunity to try advanced solutions such as debonding and failure.
