Life Sciences
SSA staff have a track record in both academic publication and practical engineering projects in many areas of life sciences. Joint replacements and orthopaedic devices, stents, stent deployment and drug delivery systems have all been the subject of SSA consultancy projects.
Oil and Gas
Oil and gas projects range from simple assessments of factors of safety and pressure drops to full plasticity simulations of valves and pump cases to ASME standards. Analysis of sealing and clamping systems have been carried out, and these have been presented at conferences in the UK and overseas.
Alternative Energy
This market sector has distinct requirements, ranging from simulations of devices to investigate how and why they work, to structural analyses of blades and associated systems to asses strength, rigidity and durability. SSA have worked on both wind and tidal energy projects.
Marine
From shock and vibration assesments of substructures to investigations of the structural behavior of complete vessels, in both normal usage and impact and accident scenarios, SSA have a wealth of experience in this field.
Lighting and Electronics
Thermal management is critical to the success of many electronics projects, especially in the field of lighting, but also generally in any power handling scenario. CFD and FEA can both be used to predict and understand the behavior of electronics and their cooling, and this understanding can be used to improve heat dissipation and component efficiency.
Pumps and Valves
CFD can be used to predict what sort of flow performance a pump can achieve, and because the flow can be visualized in a manner not really possible in any other way the performance of a pump can be optimised. SSA use STAR CCM+ from CD Adapco for high level studies such as this. Projects have also been undertaken at SSA into understanding and optimising the flow inside valves.
The response of value and pump casings to internal pressures has ceased to be an assessment based on linear analysis and interpretation. High pressures mean that elasto-plastic analysis is a must to ensure that casings pass the requirements of codes like ASME, whilst still being manufacturable.
Automotive and Motorsport
SSA has a track record in both Motorsport and more mainstream automotive simulation. Drivetrain, suspension and chassis components have all been the subject of SSA simulation projects. Our composites expertise is especially relevant in this field.
